Frequently asked questions
About planning, payment and travelling in Sri Lanka.
Planning with us
Is it really free to ask for a trip plan?
Yes. Sending a planning request costs nothing and does not commit you to anything. We review your wishes and, together with our local partners, prepare a proposed itinerary and quotation. You decide whether to go ahead.
How quickly will you reply?
Every request is read by a person in our team, and we reply by email in the language you choose. If we need more information to suggest a good route, we will ask you before preparing a proposal.
What do 3-star, 4-star and boutique mean in Sri Lanka?
Star ratings are a useful guide but vary between properties and regions. 3-star hotels are usually comfortable and simple; 4-star hotels offer more space, facilities and service. Boutique and locally distinctive stays — tea bungalows, small villas, eco-lodges — are often the most memorable.
The exact hotels, their classification and availability are confirmed by the local partner in your quotation.
Quotes, payment & bookings
Is my request a booking?
No. A request does not reserve hotels, transport or activities, and availability is not guaranteed until your trip has been confirmed with the local partner under the terms in your final quotation.
Who do I pay, and when?
You do not pay us through this website. If you decide to proceed, payment is made to the relevant Sri Lankan tour or service partner, according to the payment terms stated in your final quotation.
The quotation will state clearly which company you contract with, what is included, the currency, the payment schedule and the cancellation terms.
Why don't you show prices on the website?
Prices depend on dates, season, hotel availability, group size and transport. Rather than publish figures that may not hold, every trip receives a personal quotation from our local partners. Where you see “Quotation required”, it means exactly that.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance, including cancellation cover. Many Swedish home insurance policies include travel cover for a limited number of days, but terms differ — check yours and consider additional cover.
What if I need to cancel?
Before you confirm, there is nothing to cancel. After confirmation, the cancellation and refund terms in your final quotation from the local partner apply. Read them carefully, and ask us if anything is unclear.
Travelling in Sri Lanka
How do we get around?
Most travellers use a private car or van with an experienced local driver, which is safe, flexible and comfortable. We combine this with scenic train journeys where suitable and airport transfers.
Roads are often narrow and winding, so journeys take longer than distances suggest. Travel times on this website are approximate.
When is the best time to visit?
Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so there is usually good weather somewhere. The south and west coasts and the hill country are generally best from December to April, and the east coast from about May to September. The Cultural Triangle can be visited for most of the year.
Weather varies from year to year, and we cannot guarantee it — but we plan routes to suit the season.
Do I need a visa?
Entry rules change. Most visitors need an electronic travel authorisation or visa before arrival. Always check the current requirements for your passport on the official Sri Lankan government websites before you book flights, and make sure your passport is valid for long enough.
Is Sri Lanka safe to visit?
Many Swedish travellers visit Sri Lanka every year. Before you travel, read the current advice from the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and register with UD Resklar. Your driver and our partners know local conditions and will advise you during the trip.
Do I need vaccinations?
Ask a vaccination clinic or your healthcare provider well before departure; 1177 has information about vaccinations before travelling abroad. Bring insect repellent, sun protection and any medicines you need.
What is the time difference and currency?
Sri Lanka is UTC+5:30: 4.5 hours ahead of Sweden in winter and 3.5 hours ahead in summer. The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). Cards are accepted in many hotels and restaurants, but cash is useful in smaller places.
How should we dress and behave at temples?
Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats, and don't touch or pose with your back to Buddha statues. Ask before photographing people. Buddha images as tattoos or on clothing may cause offence, so keep them covered.
