Where you can go on safari

Yala · South-east coast
Leopards, elephants, sloth bears and lagoons. Parts usually close for a period around September–October.
Udawalawe · South, near the hill country
Open grassland with elephants seen very often, all year.
Minneriya · Cultural Triangle
The elephant gathering by the reservoir, usually strongest from about July to October.
Kaudulla · Cultural Triangle
Elephant herds around the reservoir; often chosen when the herds move on from Minneriya.
Hurulu Eco Park · Near Habarana
Quieter forest reserve where elephants are often seen in the wetter months.
Wilpattu · North-west
The largest park, with natural lakes, leopards, sloth bears and far fewer jeeps.
Wasgamuwa · Between Kandy and Polonnaruwa
Remote and quiet, known for elephants and birdlife.
Kumana · East coast, near Arugam Bay
Wetlands full of birds, with elephants and sometimes leopards.
Bundala · South coast, near Hambantota
Lagoons and wetlands for water birds and crocodiles; migrant birds in the northern winter.
Lunugamvehera · Between Udawalawe and Yala
A quieter alternative with elephants around the reservoir.
Gal Oya · East, inland from Ampara
Boat safaris on the reservoir, where elephants are sometimes seen swimming between islands.
