Colombo
The lively capital by the sea
Overview
Sri Lanka's commercial capital, with colonial architecture, busy markets, a seafront promenade and an exciting food scene.
Colombo is where many trips begin or end. Between Galle Face Green on the seafront and the bustling bazaars of Pettah, the city mixes temples, mosques, churches and colonial buildings with new cafés and restaurants.
A night or a day here works well at the start or end of a trip, especially with a late flight.
Highlights
- Sunset and street food on Galle Face Green
- The markets and Red Mosque in Pettah
- Gangaramaya Temple and the National Museum
- Some of the island's best restaurants
Practical travel notes
- Bandaranaike International Airport is north of the city, closer to Negombo. Traffic to central Colombo can take 45 minutes to well over an hour.
- Use metered tuk-tuks or app-based taxis, and agree on prices in advance otherwise.
Season
Visited all year. May to September is the south-west monsoon season, with showers, but it rarely stops city sightseeing.
