Galle Fort

A walled town by the ocean

Overview

A UNESCO-listed fortified town with ramparts, a lighthouse, cobbled lanes, boutiques and cafés.

Built by the Portuguese and extended by the Dutch, Galle Fort is a living town inside thick sea walls. Its narrow streets are lined with old houses, churches, mosques, galleries and small hotels.

Walking the ramparts at sunset, with the lighthouse and the Indian Ocean beside you, is one of the island's classic moments.

Highlights

  • A sunset walk along the ramparts
  • The lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church and the old warehouses
  • Boutiques, galleries and cafés in the cobbled lanes
  • An easy base for the beaches of the south coast

Practical travel notes

  • The fort is best explored on foot; mornings and evenings are coolest.
  • Staying inside the fort is atmospheric but rooms are limited. Beach hotels nearby are an alternative.
  • The expressway connects Galle with Colombo and the airport in roughly 2–3 hours, depending on traffic.

Season

Best from December to April. May to September brings the south-west monsoon, with rougher seas and showers.
