Overview
A pilgrimage mountain climbed by night on thousands of steps, to watch the sunrise and the peak's shadow from the summit.
Sri Pada, also called Adam's Peak, is sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians. In the pilgrimage season, pilgrims and travellers climb through the night along an illuminated stairway to reach the top at dawn.
On a clear morning, the triangular shadow of the mountain stretches out over the clouds — a moment many travellers remember from their whole trip.
Highlights
- Sunrise above the clouds from the summit
- Sharing the path with pilgrims of different faiths
- Tea estates and the village of Dalhousie at the foot of the mountain
Practical travel notes
- The climb is demanding: several thousand steps, usually 3–4 hours up for a fit walker. Suitable for active travellers in good health.
- Start around 2–3 am, bring warm clothing for the summit and a torch.
- This is a sacred site. Dress modestly and be respectful of pilgrims.
Season
The pilgrimage season usually runs from the December full moon (Unduvap Poya) to the Vesak full moon in April or May. Outside that period the path is unlit, many facilities close and the weather is less reliable.
