Nuwara Eliya & tea country

Cool air and endless green

Overview

A highland town among tea estates, waterfalls and misty hills, with colonial-era bungalows and fresh mountain air.

At around 1,900 metres above sea level, Nuwara Eliya feels like another country: cool evenings, flower gardens and old British-era buildings. All around it, tea bushes cover the slopes in neat green rows.

It is the classic base for visiting a working tea factory, walking through the estates and reaching Horton Plains early in the morning.

Highlights

  • A tea factory visit and tasting, from leaf to cup
  • Walks through the estates and past waterfalls
  • Early-morning trip to Horton Plains
  • The train journey through the hills from Nanu Oya station

Practical travel notes

  • Pack a warm layer: nights can be chilly, sometimes around 10 °C.
  • Roads in the hills are winding and slow. Distances look short on a map but take time.
  • Nanu Oya is the nearest railway station, a short drive from town.

Season

January to April is usually driest. Rain can fall at any time, and October–November is often the wettest period.
