Painted caves in the rock

Overview
A cave temple complex filled with Buddha statues and painted ceilings, used as a place of worship for over two thousand years.
The Dambulla cave temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is built into a large rock outcrop overlooking the plains. Five caves hold more than 150 Buddha images, and almost every surface is painted.
Dambulla sits on the main road between Kandy and Sigiriya, so most travellers visit on the way rather than staying overnight.
Highlights
- The painted ceilings and reclining Buddha inside the caves
- Views over the plains from the temple terrace
- The local wholesale vegetable market, one of the largest on the island
Practical travel notes
- The walk up to the caves takes about 15–20 minutes on stone steps.
- This is an active temple. Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue.
- The rock can be hot underfoot at midday; socks help.
Season
Can be visited all year. Mornings are cooler and quieter.
