Overview
A fifth-century royal citadel on top of a 200-metre rock, with water gardens below and wide views from the summit.
Sigiriya is the icon of the Cultural Triangle: a sheer granite rock rising out of flat forest, crowned with the foundations of King Kashyapa's palace. The climb passes frescoes, the mirror wall and the giant lion's paws before the final staircase to the top.
The surrounding area is a natural base for the region. From here, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and the national parks of Minneriya and Kaudulla are all within easy day-trip distance.
Highlights
- Climbing the rock early in the morning, before the heat and the crowds
- The water gardens and the frescoes halfway up
- Sunrise or sunset from neighbouring Pidurangala rock
- Village tours and cooking with local families
Practical travel notes
- The climb has many steep steps (often quoted as around 1,200) and can be very hot by late morning. Bring water and start early.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Parts of the route are exposed, so it may feel uncomfortable for people with a fear of heights.
- Pidurangala is a temple site: cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes where requested.
Season
Usually dry and warm from January to September. October to December can bring heavy showers from the north-east monsoon.
