A medieval royal city

Overview

Compact, well-preserved ruins of palaces, temples and the rock-carved Buddhas of Gal Vihara beside a large ancient reservoir.

Polonnaruwa became the royal capital after Anuradhapura, and its ruins are closer together, which makes them easier to explore in a day. The highlight is Gal Vihara, where four Buddha figures are carved directly into a granite rock face.

The city lies beside Parakrama Samudra, a huge man-made reservoir that still irrigates the surrounding rice fields.

Highlights

  • Gal Vihara's seated, standing and reclining Buddha carvings
  • The Quadrangle with its circular Vatadage shrine
  • Exploring the ruins by bicycle under the shade trees
  • Combining the visit with an elephant safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla

Practical travel notes

  • Allow around half a day. Start early or late to avoid the strongest sun.
  • Shoes and hats come off at the shrines, and the stone gets hot; carry socks.
  • Monkeys are bold here: keep food out of sight.

Season

Best from January to September. October to December can be rainy.
