A sheltered bay near Galle

Overview

A protected, curved bay with calmer water in season, snorkelling spots and the small Jungle Beach nearby.

Just a few kilometres from Galle Fort, Unawatuna's bay is sheltered by a reef, which often makes the water calmer than elsewhere on the coast. It is a practical choice for families and for combining beach days with Galle.

Around the headland, the hidden Jungle Beach and the Japanese Peace Pagoda make for a short, pleasant excursion.

Highlights

  • Swimming and snorkelling in the sheltered bay
  • Jungle Beach and the Peace Pagoda viewpoint
  • Evenings in Galle Fort, a short tuk-tuk ride away

Practical travel notes

  • The beach can be busy in high season.
  • Do not touch or stand on coral, and choose reef-friendly sunscreen.
