Overview

A crescent beach with relaxed restaurants, palm-topped rocks and boat trips to look for whales and dolphins.

Mirissa is one of the south coast's favourite beaches: a curve of sand, small guesthouses and restaurants under the palms, and the photogenic Coconut Tree Hill on the headland.

In season, early-morning boats head out to look for blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins.

Highlights

  • Whale-watching trips in season
  • Sunset from Coconut Tree Hill
  • Seafood dinners on the sand
  • Easy day trips to Galle and Weligama

Practical travel notes

  • Choose a whale-watching operator that follows responsible guidelines: keeping distance and not chasing animals. Sightings and calm seas are not guaranteed.
  • Currents can be strong. Swim only where locals indicate it is safe, and never alone.

Season

Beach season is roughly December to April. Whale watching is usually best from about November to April.
