Overview
The cultural capital of Sri Lanka's Tamil north, with grand Hindu temples, distinctive cuisine and quiet islands.
Jaffna feels different from the rest of the island: palmyra palms, flat islands and lagoons, colourful Hindu temples and its own spicy cuisine. The Nallur Kandaswamy temple is the heart of the city's religious life.
For travellers looking beyond the classic route, the north offers warm hospitality and few crowds.
Highlights
- Nallur Kandaswamy temple and its daily ceremonies
- Jaffna crab curry and other northern dishes
- The Dutch fort and the public library
- Island trips to Nainativu and Delft
Practical travel notes
- Men usually remove shirts in some Hindu temples. Follow the guidance at the entrance.
- It is a long journey from the south; consider combining with Anuradhapura or Trincomalee, or a domestic flight if available.
- The region's recent history is sensitive. Be respectful in conversations and when taking photographs.
