Anuradhapura
The first great capital
Overview
Vast brick stupas, sacred trees and ancient reservoirs spread across one of South Asia's oldest cities.
For more than a thousand years, Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka. Today its ruins cover a wide area of parkland: enormous stupas such as Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya, monastery foundations, bathing ponds and the sacred Bodhi tree, Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi.
It is still an important pilgrimage site, which gives the place a living atmosphere. Many visitors explore it by bicycle or with a local guide.
Highlights
- Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, the sacred fig tree visited by pilgrims every day
- The giant stupas of Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya
- Cycling between ruins and reservoirs in the late afternoon
- Mihintale, the hill where Buddhism is said to have arrived on the island
Practical travel notes
- The site is large: plan a full day, or two half-days to avoid the midday heat.
- White or light clothing is customary at the sacred sites. Shoulders and knees should be covered and shoes removed.
- Some sacred areas are separate from the ticketed archaeological zones; a guide helps you understand which is which.
Season
Dry and hot for much of the year. October to December can bring heavy rain.
