Overview
A natural harbour town with the clifftop Koneswaram temple, white beaches at Nilaveli and snorkelling at Pigeon Island.
Trincomalee has one of the world's finest natural harbours and a long, layered history. On Swami Rock, the Hindu Koneswaram temple looks out over the ocean.
North of town, the beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli are calm in season, and boats run to Pigeon Island National Park for snorkelling among reef fish.
Highlights
- Snorkelling at Pigeon Island National Park
- Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock
- Quiet beach days at Nilaveli and Uppuveli
- Possible whale and dolphin trips in season
Practical travel notes
- A good match for summer travel, when the south-west coast has its monsoon.
- Pigeon Island trips depend on sea conditions and park rules; don't stand on coral.
- Around 2.5–3 hours by road from Sigiriya.
Season
Best from about April or May to September. October to January is the north-east monsoon season, with heavy rain and rough seas.
