Overview

National parks around ancient reservoirs where large herds of wild elephants come to graze, especially in the dry season.

Minneriya and neighbouring Kaudulla are built around old irrigation reservoirs. As the water level drops in the dry months, fresh grass appears on the shores and elephants arrive from the surrounding forests — sometimes in large numbers.

Jeep safaris usually take place in the afternoon. Local trackers decide which park to visit on the day, depending on where the herds have been seen.

Highlights

  • Afternoon jeep safari among grazing elephant herds
  • Birdlife around the reservoirs, including storks and pelicans
  • An easy half-day trip from Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa

Practical travel notes

  • Sightings are never guaranteed. Herd sizes vary by season and from year to year.
  • Choose a responsible operator: vehicles should keep their distance and never surround the animals.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen and binoculars. Jeeps are open and can be dusty.

Season

Elephant numbers are often highest in the drier months, roughly July to October, but there can be good sightings at other times too.
