Overview
A UNESCO-listed tropical rainforest full of endemic birds, giant trees and streams, explored on foot with a local naturalist.
Sinharaja is the country's largest remaining area of primary lowland rainforest. Many of its plants and animals live nowhere else, and it is famous among birdwatchers for its mixed feeding flocks.
Walks follow forest trails with a local guide, who will point out birds, lizards, frogs and medicinal plants that are easy to miss.
Highlights
- Guided rainforest walks and birdwatching
- Waterfalls and natural pools
- Staying in a simple eco-lodge at the forest edge
Practical travel notes
- It is humid and often wet: bring rain gear, quick-drying clothes and leech socks.
- Access roads are narrow and slow; stays of at least one night are recommended.
- Walks are moderate but can be slippery.
Season
Rain is possible all year. January to April and August to September are often a little drier.
