Overview
Sri Lanka's best-known national park, with dry forest, lagoons and rocky outcrops — and one of the world's best chances to see a wild leopard.
Yala combines scrub jungle, lagoons and beaches along the south-east coast. Besides leopards, you may see elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, water buffalo and a rich birdlife.
Safaris run in the early morning and late afternoon, when the animals are most active. A full-day safari is possible for keen wildlife watchers.
Highlights
- Early-morning jeep safari in search of leopards
- Elephants and water birds at the lagoons
- Combining with quieter areas or neighbouring parks to avoid crowds
Practical travel notes
- Sightings are never guaranteed. Leopards are shy, and the park is large.
- The most popular zone can be crowded with jeeps. A responsible operator respects the animals and park rules — we would rather miss a sighting than chase one.
- Parts of the park usually close for a period during the dry season, often around September and October. Dates vary and must be checked.
Season
Good for much of the year, with the driest conditions roughly from February to July. Check annual closure dates before planning.
