The Nine Arches Bridge near Ella, framed by lush jungle

Hill Country

Ella

Hikes, bridges and hill-country views

Overview

A relaxed mountain village with short hikes, tea estates, waterfalls and the famous Nine Arches Bridge.

Ella sits in a gap in the hills with views down to the southern plains. It has become one of the island's favourite stops for its easy walks, cafés and the end-point of the most scenic stretch of the hill-country railway.

From here it is also practical to continue south to the wildlife parks or the beaches, or east towards Arugam Bay.

Highlights

  • The Nine Arches Bridge, surrounded by jungle and tea
  • Sunrise walk up Little Adam's Peak
  • The longer hike to Ella Rock with a local guide
  • Ravana Falls and nearby tea factories

Practical travel notes

  • Ella is popular and can feel busy in the high season. Staying slightly outside the village is often quieter.
  • Train times at the bridge vary and change; ask locally rather than relying on online timetables.
  • Use a guide for Ella Rock: paths are not always clearly marked.

Season

Often drier than the western hills, with good conditions from January to September. October and November can be wet.
