Overview
A laid-back surf village with famous point breaks, lagoons full of birdlife and a relaxed, international atmosphere.
Arugam Bay is the island's best-known surf destination, with breaks suited to both experienced surfers and, at the gentler spots, beginners. The village itself is small, relaxed and lined with cafés and simple guesthouses.
Lagoon trips and nearby Kumana National Park offer a quieter side, with elephants, crocodiles and birds.
Highlights
- Surfing the point breaks, or lessons at beginner spots
- Lagoon safaris at sunrise
- Kumana National Park for birds and wildlife
Practical travel notes
- Remote: roughly 3–4 hours by road from Ella and further from the airport.
- Respect local customs: the area has Muslim, Tamil and Sinhalese communities. Swimwear belongs on the beach.
