On the edge of the highlands

Overview
A quiet ridge-top town with tea estates, Lipton's Seat viewpoint and some of the widest views in the hill country.
Haputale sits right on the southern edge of the highlands, so on a clear day the land seems to fall away to the plains far below. It is calmer than Ella and surrounded by working tea estates.
The best-known viewpoint, Lipton's Seat, is where Sir Thomas Lipton is said to have surveyed his tea empire.
Highlights
- Sunrise at Lipton's Seat, before the mist rolls in
- Walking down through the Dambatenne tea estate
- Adisham Bungalow, a former colonial country house
Practical travel notes
- Mornings are clearest. Clouds often cover the views by midday.
- Accommodation is smaller and simpler than in Ella, with some lovely boutique options.
Season
Usually best from January to April and in the drier summer months. October–November is often wet.
