Scenic train journeys

Slow travel through the clouds

Overview

The hill-country railway between Kandy and Ella winds past tea estates, waterfalls and tunnels — one of the great train rides in Asia.

The line climbs from Kandy through Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya), Haputale and down to Ella and Badulla. The whole stretch from Kandy to Ella takes most of a day; many travellers choose a shorter section, such as Nanu Oya to Ella, for the most dramatic scenery.

There are other lovely routes too, such as the coastal line south of Colombo towards Galle, which runs right beside the sea.

Highlights

  • Tea estates and waterfalls between Nanu Oya and Ella
  • The highest point of the line near Pattipola
  • Watching village life from an open window

Practical travel notes

  • Reserved seats are limited and popular sections often sell out well in advance. We can try to arrange tickets, but seats cannot be guaranteed.
  • Trains are frequently delayed, and timetables change. Plan a relaxed day with no tight connections.
  • If no reserved seats are available, a private driver can follow a similar route by road.
  • Leaning out of doors and windows is risky: enjoy the view safely.

Season

The views are clearest from January to April; mist and rain are common at other times, which can also be beautiful.
